Launched at North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in November 1942, the SS Collis P. Huntington was one of three Liberty ships on which John McCusker served during the war. The first, SS John Witherspoon (no photograph available), was torpedoed and sunk while en route to North Russia in Convoy PQ-17. McCusker shipped on the Huntington for an intended voyage to Russia via the Persian Gulf route, but, as luck would have it, the ship was in a collision with a Dutch freighter and just managed to limp back to New York.
